The Knowledge Economy is very difficult to define but is potentially massive and incorporates elements of SuperPort and the Low Carbon Economy too, but the four main areas are:
- Life Sciences (e.g. Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacology etc.)
- Creative and Digital Industries
- Advanced Manufacturing
- Financial and Professional Services
It is hoped that 60,000 jobs will be created locally in these sectors by 2020.
The area already has a good base for the continued development of the knowledge economy e.g. 3 universities; the Liverpool Science Park; the Daresbury Science Innovation Centre in Halton; a developing biomedical campus; further development at the Knowsley and Heath business parks; and advanced automotive manufacture around Halewood. There are also exciting plans to develop the waterfronts in the Liverpool and Wirral Waters projects. Further afield the Media City development including the re-location of several BBC departments at Salford offers opportunities for local people and businesses.
To succeed in many opportunities in the Knowledge Economy a high level of education, usually to at least degree level, is required. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) qualifications are particularly valuable.
