Revision Tips

Revision time again?

Not everybody likes to revise, however we all have to do it at some point in our lives.

I’m sure that there are lots of other things that you would much rather be doing instead of revising but unfortunately it is something that we have to do. We need to do this so that we can try to store and learn the information we need for exams, interviews etc.

Being prepared and planning ahead

  • Try to plan ahead and prepare early. By doing this you will be able to do shorter blocks of revision practice over a longer period of time.
  • Set yourself a schedule of what needs to be done and by when.
  • Be realistic about your timetable/plan and try to create it into something that is achievable and you can keep to. (Don’t use the other activities you participate in as an excuse not to study)

(Such as if you have Football or another activity for a couple of hours on one of your study sessions try to see if maybe you can do a shorter period of study on that day or see if you can fit in another hour somewhere else in your week.)

What is the best way to revise?

There isn’t a best way to revise as we are all different. Try to find out a way that works best for you.

  • Do you prefer to study alone or with friends?
  • Maybe think about starting up a study group? This can help by motivating each other to keep going and might also keep you to your timetable.
  • Do you prefer to study in silence or with background music?
  • Do you like to keep reading and reading through pages of notes or do you prefer to pick out the relevant information and put it on to cards so that it doesn’t look too overwhelming?
  • Do you prefer to listen to information? Try recording your notes and listen back to them.
  • Do you prefer to see the information more visually through diagrams, charts, pictures, colour coding, Sticky notes etc.

Study time

  • Try to have everything you will need for your revision all together.
  • Have Snacks and drinks available to avoid you from taking any unnecessary breaks.
  • Try to stay disciplined and reward your hard work.
  • Remember to take breaks as if you don’t you will not be able to store the information as you will become overloaded.
  • Break your revision up into sections and practice testing your knowledge on what you have learnt already.
  • Make notes on areas you feel you need to study more.

Where to study?

  • Ideally you should study somewhere fairly quiet and free from distractions. (Such as the Television, siblings etc)
  • Find a safe a comfortable place that you feel you can concentrate in.

Study tips

Plan and leave yourself plenty of time to study.

Don’t leave your revision until the last minute and stay in control.

Try not to study whilst you are sitting in bed, you will become tired much quicker.

Listen to your recorded notes whilst you drift off to sleep, you will be surprised how much you’ll remember in the morning.

Reward yourself for all your hard work. It doesn’t have to be all work and no play, meet up with friends, play on games etc. You deserve a break, just keep it realistic.

Break away from the books and look at other ways to revise by varying your learning?

Search for information on the Internet, watch or listen to factual programmes.

Consider attending study sessions run through your school, College or University.
